Wishing a big Happy Birthday today to…

Wishing a big Happy Birthday today to my friend and hero, Dr. Tom #Hornbein. Tom is most well known for his groundbreaking, audacious ascent of the West Ridge of #Everest on May 22nd, 1963, with Willi #Unsoeld. Theirs was a climb for the record books: it was the first time anyone went to the highest Himalaya and deliberately targeted the hardest route they could find rather than the easiest way to the top. The difficulty of their route was shown on their summit day; Tom and Willi quickly reached a point from where they could not turn back, and had to go for the summit and descend a route they had never seen. Theirs was the first ascent of the West Ridge, the first traverse of Mount Everest, and it ushered in a whole new era in Himalayan mountaineering. Amazingly, however, that is but a small part of all that Tom has packed into his 85 years. He has raised an amazing family, was head of anesthesiology at University of Washington for 40 years, and has inspired generations of climbers and adventurers worldwide. So, here’s to Tom, and many more birthdays to come! | This photo was taken during one of our interviews with Tom during the creation of our award-winning film on the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition, #highandhallowed. #liveyouradventure #tomhornbein #williunsoeld #AMEE #westridge @eddiebauer @davidcmorton @jimaikman

Wind whips post-monsoon snow across the slopes…

Wind whips post-monsoon snow across the slopes of Cho Oyu, the world’s 6th highest #peak at 8,201 meters or 26,906 feet. The first real attempt on the mountain was made by the British in 1952 (in preparation for the 1953 #Everest expedition), led by famed climber Eric #Shipton. They didn’t get very far, though, with George Lowe and Edmund #Hillary being turned around at 6,650 meters by avalanche conditions. Two years later, in 1954, and #Austrian expedition had better luck. On October 19, 1954, Herbert #Tichy, Joseph #Jöchler and Pasang Dawa Lama (#Sherpa) reached the summit via the Northwest Ridge, which is now the standard route on the mountain. While considered one of the easiest of the 14 – #8000m peaks, Cho Oyu claimed many lives in the early days: the second ascent, in 1958, claimed 1 climber; four more dies in an avalanche in 1959; and 1964 saw another 2 climbers perish on the mountain. This photo was taken in late-September, 1997, while guiding my first expedition to Cho Oyu. #chooyu #Tibet #8000ers #liveyouradventure #himalaya #everydayasia #everydaytibet #china #edmundhillary

In December, 2012, I was able to go climbing in New Zealand with @davidcmorton, @charley.mace, and Brent Bishop. One of the best mornings was this one, when we awoke terrain at 5 a.m. thinking that our plans to climb #Aspiring were done. At the last possible moment, the clouds parted, we hopped in a helicopter, had a great blitz of Aspiring’s aesthetic Southwest Ridge, and we’re back in #Wanaka by dinner. On the flight out, I was able to snap a fun shot showing the braided, glacial rivers flowing through the New Zealand countryside – a stunning end to a perfect day. #tbt @eddiebauer #liveyouradventure #aerial #newzealand #nz

On May 22, 1963, Tom #Hornbein and…

On May 22, 1963, Tom #Hornbein and Willi #Unsoeld saw the tattered #American flag fluttering on the summit of #Everest some 100 feet above them. The flag had been left there three weeks earlier by Jim #Whittaker, the first American to summit the mountain, and Nawang #Gombu. Hornbein and Unsoeld had just made the historic and audacious first ascent of the West Ridge, arriving on top at 6:15pm, and descending the Southeast Ridge (making the first ever traverse of the mountain). They became the 4th and 5th Americans to summit, as teammates Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad had reached the summit hours before. The West Ridge climb is one of the greatest in American mountaineering history, and of climbing history in general. A proud ascent by the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition – see our award-winning film on the expedition on @Vimeo on Demand through the link in my profile. Going through stock images today, and came across this fun one: the full #moon rises behind #Everest, #Lhotse, and #Nuptse as climbers (mainly #Sherpa carrying loads) begin to make their way through the #Khumbu #Icefall. The Milky Way is clearly visible in the night sky. This was initially shot for a timelapse, but made more sense as a single frame. It was shot today, April 14, 2012, as @davidcmorton, @charley.mace, Brent Bishop, and I were attempting the West Ridge of Everest. #liveyouradventure #mounteverest @eddiebauer #travelstoke #everydayasia #everydaynepal @nature #NatureAddict

Day 5 of the #blackandwhitephotochallenge: In 2012,…

Day 5 of the #blackandwhitephotochallenge: In 2012, heading in to #Everest for an attempt on the West Ridge, I awoke early in the village of #Pheriche to take photos. After a while of rambling around through fresh snow and frozen creeks, I stumbled upon this view of #Kangtega and the shoulder of #Thamserku. It took a while to get the right combination of slow shutter for the water without totally losing the sun-accented ridges, but finally it worked.

This image always makes me think of Loren #Eiseley in “Flow of the River”: “If there is magic in this planet, it is contained in water… Its substance reaches everywhere; it touches the past and prepares the future: It moves under the poles and wanders thinly in the heights of the air. It can assume forms of exquisite perfection in a snowflake, or strip the living to a single shining bone cast up by the sea.” This has been great fun and a good exercise going through files to find the ones that translate well to #blackandwhite. I’d like to pass the torch onward to @davidcmorton, great friend, climbing partner, and one of the more creative people I know. Let’s see it, David! #liveyouradventure #blackandwhitechallenge #loreneiseley #water
