“Everything we lost is coming back, and more,” said Generose. A resident of #Rulindo District, #Rwanda, she lived through the #genocides (yes, there was more than one in Rwanda) to see her country at peace, with growing prosperity, and, to her amazement, a new #water system going in near her home. Day 1 of the #blackandwhitephotochallenge, this one out of the archives from the Tokyo airport…Thanks @pedromcbride for pulling me into this! #blackandwhitechallengeRead More
Part of a #timelapse of the moon rising behind #Lhotse, #Imjatse (Island Peak), and other peaks near #Dingboche, #Khumbu, #Nepal. This is the same timelapse I used to create the star trails/moonrise image posted previously. Beautiful night in a beautiful place! #moonrise #liveyouradventure #travelstoke #starsRead More
The Milky Way lights up the night sky above #Cholatse and#Tawoche near the settlement of #Tukhla, #Khumbu, #Nepal. Always amazing to me to be reminded of how much light pollution we have in the west, and thus how much beauty we miss in the night sky. #liveyouradventure #travelstokeRead More
Shooting a timelapse above the village of #Deboche tonight, watching #Everest and the south face of #Lhotse and #Nuptse turn crimson. While I sat, camera clicking away, I saw a dozen #danphe, the national bird of #Nepal, for musk deer, and I’m 50% certain I caught a glimpse of a snow leopard scuttling away through the rhododenron forest…not kidding.
Amazing evening, and I’m reminded of the #Skanda #Purana: “In a hundred ages of the gods, I cannot tell three of the glories of the #Himalaya. As the dew is dried by the morning sun, so are the sins of man at the sight of the Himalaya.” #magic #liveyouradventure #travelstoke
#Namche Bazaar was buzzing with life tonight as #Sherpa continued to go house-to-house (as they had all day), singing and soliciting funds for local charitable programs. Meanwhile, ethereal clouds, dusted by the filtered light of the moon, danced through the night sky, revealing only bits of the #Kongde Ri massif rising behind town. A magical night in the #Khumbu…Thanks to @wendebvalentine for encouraging me to go out and enjoy it. #liveyouradventure #namchebazaarRead More
Leaving the chaos of #Kathmandu, #Nepal, in a few minutes to fly to #Lukla and begin the fun trek up to #Everest Basecamp. Clear day!
In this old photo, taken in 1993 when I was a student in Kathmandu, peaks of the #Ganesh Himal rise in the distance behind the #pagoda roof of #Nyatapola Temple in #Bhaktapur, one of the ancient principalities of the Kathmandu Valley. Sadly, with dust and pollution in the Valley, views of the #Himalaya from Kathmandu are increasingly rare.Read More
Off to #Kathmandu, #Nepal, to guide my friend Art to #Everest Basecamp. It’s been more than two years since I was last in Nepal, a place and people that have had more impact on my life than most anything. Excited to return and reconnect, but as always it’s a double-edged sword, as I’m leaving @wendebvalentine and the kids again. As I’ve said before, I’ll console myself in the knowledge that, in the words of George #Mallory, at night we can look up and “see the same stars”. In this photo, ethereal clouds float above prayer flags at Namo Buddha #Monastery near Dapcha, Nepal. #namobuddha #prayerflagsRead More
One of the things I love about preparing new presentations is I often dig into my image archives and rediscover photographs I had completely forgotten. Last week, I find this one of @charlesmace (Charley Mace) and Brent Bishop tagging the dramatic 12,218 foot #summit of #Aoraki, or Mount #Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak. Good memories of a great trip and climb for @eddiebauer! #liveyouradventure #hi5_fa @davidcmorton #newzealandRead More
