Video of the Swiss on Everest in 1952

I just came across this cool film of the 1952 Swiss attempt on Everest via the Southeast Ridge, from the Travel Film Archive.

While Hillary and Tenzing's successful ascent on May 29, 1953, is quite well known, oft-forgotten is the Swiss in 1952. In that year, Raymond Lambert and a young Sherpa - Tenzing Norgay - made it within 300 meters of the summit of Everest before turning back due to weather and oxygen issues. An amazing attempt, and nearly successful.

Enjoy the film below, and be sure to check out more of the films at the Travel Film Archive!

I have been there 3 years ago, trying to decide whether it is smart to join a group of climbers. Finally I decided not to go. Today I know that this decision saved my life.
