90 years ago today George Mallory and Geoffrey Bruce were engaged in the first summit attempt of the 1924 #Everest Expedition. Racked by high winds, cold, and trouble with their Nepali support team, Mallory and Bruce aborted their attempt near this spot between Camp V and Camp VI. They returned that day to Camp IV at the North Col, passing Norton and Somervell who were just beginning their historic summit attempt. In 2001 I retraced the 1924 route up the North Ridge to Camp VI with Brent On its, and we managed to rediscover that high camp that Norton and Somervell established. Amazing to climb in their direct footsteps and see the aesthetic of the original route – much nicer, although more challenging, than today’s route that deviates from the ridge to follow the path of least resistance onto the North Face. #malloryandirvine #Everest1924 #Mallory #irvine #lostoneverest
