June 6, 1924: Today one of the greatest mysteries in the history of #exploration began on Mount #Everest. #Mallory and #Irvine began their final, fateful summit bid. Today they climbed from the relative peace and security of the North Col/Camp IV, up the sweeping, whale-backed North Ridge to Camp V at roughly 25,400 feet, assisted by a team of stalwart porters. This shot, from 2003, was taken of Jesse Rickert just above the Col. Camp V in 1924 was about 1/4 up the rock from the top of the snow and to the left, leeward side of the ridge. Amazing be there in a down suit, and all the high tech gear we have today and imagine them climbing the she terrain in wool and tweed. #everesthistory #malloryandirvine #1924 #todayinhistory
