Today (May 22) is International Biodiversity Day,…

Today (May 22) is International Biodiversity Day, and a great day to recognize and celebrate #mountainbiodiversity. Over 1/4 of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity and 1/2 of the world’s biodiversity hot spots are in mountain areas. And, the chronic impoverishment of mountain peoples and communities is major factor in the environmental challenges facing these sensitive areas. Yet another reason to #HelpCarryTheLoad for #Nepal, help the people of Nepal rise from the ashes of the #nepalearthquake and rebuild stable communities and economic systems that protect and preserve these critical #biodiversity resources. #themountainpartnership @welovemountains #liveyouradventure @eddiebauer

In a hundred ages of the gods,…

In a hundred ages of the gods,
I cannot tell thee of the glories of Himalaya;
As the dew is dried by the morning sun,
So are the sins of man at the sight of Himalaya.
– The Skanda Purana
That sentiment – of the awe-inspiring, almost transcendent power of the #Himalaya – has been a primary draw for millions of tourists to visit #Nepal since it opened its doors to the world in 1950. It is these tourists – and the money they inject into the local economies – that have helped build the livelihoods of Nepal’s mountain communities, establishing an economy whose health is greatly dependent on visitors from abroad. In a country with endemic corruption and little to no trickle down, it is this money – directly injected through the wallets of visiting tourists hiring guides and porters, buying food, purchasing gifts, offering tips – which dictates the rise and fall of many mountain families and communities.

I hear now of many people canceling or considering canceling their plans to visit Nepal in the autumn. While I understand the fears some may have, most of Nepal’s rural communities will be ready to accept visitors by the post-monsoon trekking season. And, they will be eager. So, please, if you want to help Nepal rebuild, if you’d like to contribute to its phoenix-like rise from the ashes, plan a visit. Engage the local economies, open you wallet and open you mind, and help Nepali communities reestablish themselves and their vital tourist businesses. We can all #HelpCarryTheLoad. #liveyouradventure #nepalearthquake #nepaliloveyou | In this photo, trekkers move along a ridgeline beneath the towering massif of #Kangtega, #Khumbu.

Lord #Shiva, commonly known as the God…

Lord #Shiva, commonly known as the God of Destruction, is one of the most popular deities in #Nepal, and is often represented by the #lingam, seen here at #Pashupatinath Temple in #Kathmandu. Shiva’s nature, however, is far more complex than simple destruction: He is not a god of wanton destruction, but rather destroys with the intent of regeneration, of transformation and re-creation with the removal of evil, ignorance, and hubris and an increase in positive power, strength, and beauty. As I sift through thoughts and mourning over the devastating losses in Nepal, I find myself searching for a silver lining, a glint of light at the end of the long tunnel.
Disasters such as the #NepalEarthquake are never fair, never simple, and always tragic. But, already through the dust one can see glimmers of Shiva’s regeneration: Stories of traditional #caste barriers dropping as villagers help one another regardless of age old, ingrained discrimination. Nepalis flood home from a vast diaspora, putting themselves at great risk and sacrificing hard-earned money to help their friends, their neighbors, their countrymen and women. Grassroots efforts springing up across the country and around the world, working together to collectively build and rebuild a very special place and people. And, mostly, the ever-inspiring tenacity and innate beauty of the Nepalese people, who continue onward through the challenges, carrying this load as they have so many in the past.
I can only hope that the world community can also be touched by Shiva’s transformative intent, and drop the old ways of forgetting and moving on, and instead remained focused on this very big and very real crisis. There is much work yet to do, much support yet to give, much compassion and assistance and love needed. It will take us all, as a human community, to rally to Nepal’s side. Perhaps, through the landslides and dust and blood and suffering of the earthquake, some of Shiva’s transformative light can shine on us all.

When I first met him, Karma Tshering…

When I first met him, Karma Tshering was busy carving the ubiquitous Tibetan Buddhist “Om mani padme hum” #mantra into stone on the side of the steep trails outside #Phortse, #Nepal. It looked like hard work, his arthritic fingers twisted around handles of wooden tools. But, he kept on, diligently chipping out the mantra associated with #Avalokiteshvara, the #bodhisattva of #compassion. While complex in definition and debated in meaning, many identify the mantra – carved in stone, spun on prayer wheels, flapping on prayer flags – as being the mantra of compassion, and of the desire to free sentient beings from suffering. Perhaps we all can symbolically join the arthritic fingers of Karma Tshering, engage the cause of compassion, and #HelpCarryTheLoad for Nepal. #Nepal was rocked again today by another…

#Nepal was rocked again today by another powerful aftershock, this one magnitude 7.3 with an epicenter in #Chautara area east of #Kathmandu along the Friendship Highway leading to #Tibet. This photo of morning #chiyaa (Nepali chai) being made was taken in the village of #Chaubas, not far from the latest epicenter. The situation in Nepal is far from over, despite the media’s attention elsewhere. Please stay engaged, please share, and please keep giving to long term relief and rebuilding efforts – see link in profile for suggestions. Together, we can all #HelpCarryTheLoad for Nepal and the millions who need us.

Yesterday, we celebrated mothers, those amazing beings…

Yesterday, we celebrated mothers, those amazing beings who bring us into this world, nurture us, support and protect us, share with us their love and laughter and wisdom. How many children in #Nepal no longer have a mother to celebrate? How many mothers no longer have children to love? How many families had their lives shredded on April 25, their livelihoods and relationships and all they knew buried in the rubble of falling buildings, crumbling mountainsides, cascading avalanches?
And, how many around the world have already forgotten the need that still exists, the suffering ongoing, the motherless children and childless mothers?
Please keep the story of Nepal alive. Let’s all continue to #HelpCarryTheLoad. Nepal will rebuild. Nepal will rise from the ashes of tragedy. But, we all need to pitch in.

If you can give – even a small amount – please see the link in my profile to support dedicated groups on the ground.

#tbt to the Langtang Valley in 1992….

#tbt to the Langtang Valley in 1992. Our porters, soon to become friends and then family, Kancha (Membar), Minjou, and Dindou Tamang in Dhunche. Today, 23 years later, I pulled back into @holdernesstoday , the place that helped enable me to go to Nepal that first time and opened so many other doors, taught so many critical lessons. As I write, i have no idea of the fate of my three friends above. I know their village – the small hamlet of Gri in the lower Ganesh Himal – was likely destroyed by the April 25 #earthquake. It may be disappearing from the world headlines, but the needs of #Nepal have not dimished in two weeks; if anything, they’ve only grown and become more pressing as the monsoon nears and aid struggles to reach rural communities. Please help many of us to keep the #nepalearthquake in the news and to keep the money flowing to those working on the ground. The rebuild will take time, funds, and a whole lot of dedication and compassion. You can #HelpCarryTheLoad by clicking on the link in my profile and/or by contributing here: https://www.globalgiving.org/fundraisers/raise-nepal/ #powerofsocialmedia @eddiebauer #liveyouradventure
