“Of course I worry about #Ganga. She…

“Of course I worry about #Ganga. She is our life. She is our water. But here, she is clean and happy,” he said in broken English and #Hindi I could just barely decipher. “Please, more #samosa?” Here at #Devprayag, the sacred spot where the #Bhagirathi and #Alaknanda Rivers join and the #Ganges officially begins, the river does indeed look healthy and happy, with torrents of water roaring from the #Garhwal #Himalaya above. But, just miles downstream from his humble shop, #dams and #diversions, #pollution and #population take their toll, and this mighty, #sacred river suffers greatly. Along its 1500 mile course to the sea, it is more #revered and #reviled than any on earth. #GangaS2S #indiapictures #indiaphotos #india_gram #indiagram #travelstoke #reveredandreviled #liveyouradventure #portraitmood #portrait

Most of the year, much of the…

Most of the year, much of the #Tibetan Plateau is a mixture of subtle browns and beiges, mottled earth tones of the high #alpine #desert. But, post-monsoon, the Plateau springs to life with a vivid, if short-lived, spray of color as the plants of this arid land burst into the song of life. | In this photo, a #drokpa, or Tibetan #nomad, walks through the hinterlands of Western #Tibet not far from Mount #Kailash. #liveyouradventure #tibetanplateau #colorsofnature #nature #everydayasia #everydaytibet

Not all #naturephotos are happy ones with…

Not all #naturephotos are happy ones with cute animals or beautiful sunsets. In 2003, I was shooting an adventure race in the #desert near #Riemvasmaak, South #Africa, when I came upon this agonizing sight: a large #gemsbok (#Oryx #gazella) caught in a rancher’s barbed wire fence. Meant of course to keep cattle in and predators out, the fence became an inadvertent death trap for many animals: I’d see about a dozen more fence casualties in the region, including more #antelope, #gazelle, and even raptors. A sad situation with no easy solution. Day 4 of the #challengeonnaturephotography. #southafrica #everydayafrica #barbedwire #wildlifephotos #wildlife #NatureAddict #naturephotos

My grandmother would have turned 96 today,…

My grandmother would have turned 96 today, but sadly passed away last August when I was in #Nepal shooting for a @nova_pbs film on the #earthquake as well as shooting #archaeology in Upper #Mustang. Interestingly, it was her trip to Nepal during the 1990 People’s Movement, and her stories of this inspiring and wonderful country and people that really piqued my interest in visiting and learning. While I would’ve much preferred to be at her bedside when she passed, it was strangely fitting that I was instead on the other side of the world, under distant stars in the country she opened my eyes to – and which has since changed and impacted my life in deep and profound ways. Happy Birthday, Grandma. I love you. | In this still-rough #timelapse, #clouds at #sunset scatter in front of the pyramid of #Nilgiri, a prime sentinel in Upper Mustang rising high above the #Kali #Gandaki River. #challengeonnaturephotography day 3. #liveyouradventure #goneisntgone #gonebutnotforgotten #HelpCarryTheLoad #nepaliloveyou #nepalquake #timelapseworldly

Day 2 of the #challengeonnaturephotography: He wasn’t…

Day 2 of the #challengeonnaturephotography: He wasn’t mad at the #penguins, he was mad at me. I thought I had approached quietly, respectfully, but apparently the roughly 6,000 pound southern #elephant #seal was under the impression I had eyes on his #harem, and told me in no uncertain terms to back off. I snapped a few more photos – including this one – before finding out just how fast a few tons of angry blubber can move: FAST. Fortunately, I didn’t pose enough of a threat for him to give chase for more than a few seconds, and he quickly went back to bellowing and lounging with his females as some 500,000 king penguins and countless fur seals and other wildlife mingled in the biodiverse utopia of #Salisbury Plain, South Georgia. #liveyouradventure #elephantseal #kingpenguin #penguin #wildlife #wildlifephotos #southgeorgia #southgeorgiaisland #greatsouthernocean #salisburyplain

Made some friends this morning on a sunrise run along the #Rio #Grande River here on the Santa Ana #Pueblo near #Albuquerque. Wish I had more than my #S5 to capture the colors and textures, but it will have to suffice. #liveyouradventure #santaanapueblo #hyatttamaya #icai #horses #newmexico

Day 1 of the #challengeonnaturephotography, and a…

Day 1 of the #challengeonnaturephotography, and a #tbt to September, 2006, in far western #Tibet. I was leading a dream trip ostensibly to climb #Gurla #Mandhata (which we did), but we also built in some dream destinations: a sacred #kora around Mt. #Kailash, a visit to #Tirthapuri, and several days in the canyon country of the ancient kingdom of #Guge. Beginning in the 10th Century, Guge ruled over vast swaths on territory, and had their capital here in the dramatic canyons of #Tholing and #Tsaparang. Amidst these towering walls of crumbling stone are vast tunnel systems, many meditation caves, monasteries, and the palace of Tsaparang. It’s a place of great history and mystery, a seat of spiritual energy and sadness at the losses from the Cultural Revolution. And, I can only imagine the changes (both good and bad) that have come in the decade since I was there with paved roads, intense development, and an influx of Han Chinese. | In this photo, a late monsoon #thunderstorm douses the canyons with needed rain as sunset paints the #desert sky. #everydaytibet #liveyouradventure #westtibet #bestmountainartists #WeLoveMountains #landscape
