An early #TBT and a big happy...

An early #TBT and a big happy birthday wish to a couple of American climbing legends: Jim and Lou #Whittaker. On May 1, 1963, Big Jim became the first #American to reach the summit of Mount #Everest, climbing with the late Ngawang #Gombu. While his twin brother, Lou, never made the summit of Mount Everest, he has made massive contributions to American mountaineering. He organized and led the first American attempt on the north side of Mount Everest in 1982, and returned again in 1984 when Phil Ershler reached the summit by a new route. In 1989, who led an expedition to the north wall of Kanchenjunga, putting many climbers on top. Lou also founded and ran for many years @rmiexpeditions , the country’s largest guide service and one where climbing @ed_viesturs cut his teeth early on. And, it was Lou who first inspired and encourage me to get into climbing when I met him in 1984 at age 10 when this photo was taken. So, a big happy birthday to Lou and Jim, and here’s to many more years of love, laughter, and adventure! #happybirthday #bigjim #louwhittaker #Rainier #everest1963
