#Kanchenjunga (aka #Kangchendzönga), the world's third highest...

#Kanchenjunga (aka #Kangchendzönga), the world’s third highest peak, sits on the border between #Sikkim and #Nepal. Only a bit shorter than #Everest – and much more difficult by the standard route – #Kanch has seen only a fraction of the number of ascents as Everest, and fewer even than #K2, the world’s second highest peak. It was first climbed on May 26, 1955, by a British team including George Band (he’d be 87 today), Joe Brown, Tony Streather, and Norman Hardie, and wasn’t climbed again for 22 years. A stunning and sacred peak, Kanchenjunga means “Five Treasure Houses of Snow” for its five primary summits (all over 8000 meters), and is considered a home of the diety Dzö-nga a location of a sacred #beyul, or magical valley. It is also one of the peaks that inspired me early on when some of climbing heroes, then mentors, and now colleagues, climbed the North Wall in 1989: @ed_viesturs, George Dunn, Craig van Hoy, Greg Wilson, Larry Nielson, and Phil Ershler summitting under the leadership of Lou #Whittaker. An enchanting mountain I’d love to climb one day. | In this photo, the peak is seen at sunset from #Pelling, Sikkim, #India. #liveyouradventure #bestmountainartists #mountainlove #WeLoveMountains #himalaya #everydayasia #everydaynepal #everydayindia #indiapictures #indiaphotos #india_gram
