Mount #Kenya, #Africa’s second highest peak, supplies…

Mount #Kenya, #Africa’s second highest peak, supplies some 70% of the nation’s water. It’s also important spiritually, believed to be one of the abodes of #Ngai, the good of the #Maasai and #Samburu people.

But, Kenya’s glaciers are dwindling, it’s storage capacity diminished. By 2050, its snows will be no more.

Support our mountains on this International Mountain Day…and every day!

A herd of #Himalayan #Ibex stand on…

A herd of #Himalayan #Ibex stand on the flanks of the #Gangotri Glacier below #Shivling, #India.

The Gangotri gives birth to the #Ganges River (known at this point as the #Bhagirathi) just a few kilometers downstream. The Bhagirathi joins the #Alaknanda just below the #Tehri Dam to form the Ganges proper. It then flows some 1500 miles to the Bay of #Bengal, providing essential water for an estimated 400 million people within its #watershed.

But, like so many mountain glaciers, the Gangotri is receding at an alarming rate – about 15-20 meters per year, and nearly 2 kilometers in the past century.
Mountains are the water towers of the earth, and thus cornerstones of humanity. Let’s honor them today on International Mountain Day, and urge our elected officials to take mountains and mountain preservation seriously.
